Any inventors/tinkerers/hobby engineers on here?
|
I have an invention for a tool and want to get a prototype made, I don’t have the skills or the means to do it myself. Any suggestions?

If you're in London next week then the British Invention Show could be worth a visit. It's on at the Barbican from 23rd to 26th October

bruuuno - Do your research
If you are based in/around London then pay a visit to the British Library Business & IP Centre. https://www.bl.uk/business-and-ip-centre
You can research to see what's involved and also if there's something similar already patented - the staff there are normally free to help you as to what to do. If they are not busy then they will actually go through things with you. You need to have a Reader Pass to use the facilities - see here for details:
https://www.bl.uk/help/how-to-get-a-reader-pass
They run regular workshops, most of which are free, but they also do a number of regular webinars which are very useful.
They also work in conjunction with The Institute of Patentees and Inventors - they are set up as a charity so can provide a lot of help and guidance for free (to begin with) and can go through the different processes that you would need to go through - including advising you on whether it is worthwhile trying to patent an idea.
http://www.theipi.org.uk
They host weekly sessions at the British Library where you can get a free 1-to-1 meeting for an hour with one of their top guys
https://www.bl.uk/business-and-ip-centre/information-clinics
They get booked up very quickly once they open registration (normally about 3 weeks in advance). Your best bet would be to go along to the Library and try and book there - or they will tell you when registration opens or set you up with a separate meeting.

I've been waiting for someone to invent a thermostatically controlled butter dish so whether it's summer or winter your butter is at a perfect softness to spread.
I'd be happy to pay £50 for one of those so if any boffin wants to invent it, you already have your first order.

An extremely powerful sex pheronomone.
At the moment, it only works on female mosquitoes, so I'm covered in bites (these are actually love bites, but their effect is the same), and I think I'm coming down with malaria.
But once I've ironed out the initial difficulties, I'm going to be rich (and exhausted).

Working for a Patent agent.
First Here Read.
https://www.gov.uk/topic/intellectual-property/patents
Unlike a solicitor they won't charge for the first meeting. Note as previously stated you actually will need a prototype. Made by you.
Cost for a patent UK one will cost in region of 3000 to 4000.

You can find a load of freelancers around the world using places like Peopleperhour.
I've just had a website built for a client that cost £75. Local companies were quoting me 1000 +.

It's very difficult to patent an idea.. You need to convince the patent office examiner that it works.. But you don't even know yourself.. You cant actually prove it which makes this harder. But a oateht attorney can advise you and most won't charge for advice.. My firm certainly doesn't

Mrs works for a patent attorneys. She said definitely need a patent before making a prototype and disclosing it to the public, you don't want to disclose it at this stage without protection. First step is contacting a patent attorney who will give you advice without charge.

Get a patent lawyer. But only if you truly believe you can make money

A patent is quite expensive to acquire. However, if you truly believe it could be monetised that would be the game you might make. Knowing how likely it could be made and how original it is would be best peruses with a patents lawyer in the area you wish to make your product.

I've invented this kind of nail thing, but with a slot in the top and a helix wrapped around the shaft.
I think they would be ideal for attaching things to each other, but haven't really figured out how to get them in and out.
If your tool helps with that, perhaps we could go into partnership.
